Friendly Harbor
is made up of the mental heath consumers, advocates, professionals, and friends who believe that people can and do recover from mental illness. We know that self-help is a critical ingredient for recovery. and we encourage it by:
- Providing a social network. People with a mental illness often tend to isolate themselves, and lose opportunities to connect with others with similar problems. We provide a welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to find and make long lasting friends.
- Assisting people to change thier roles. People with a mental illness tend to believe that they are helpless and dependent. When they learn that they can do something about their ilness, they feel a sense of empowerment and are able to help [not just hemselves, but others with similar problems.
- Teaching effective coping methods. People who have learned to cope with a psychiactric illness are good teachers for those who are newly diagnosed with the same illness. Their ability to listen and share their perspectives are invaluable tools to help others.
- Furnishing role models. Those who have successfully dealt with their illness become role models and peer advocates, and inspire others who are working toward their recovery.
- Giving meaning to people's lives Self-help provides a meaningful activity for becoming involved in developing programs to help others, as well as themselves.
